It’s 5 O’clock in the Morning…

26 Oct

This morning was an early one due to another morning appointment.  My weeks pretty much flip flop, with one week being chock full of early mornings and the next being all late nights.

As I was thinking up a title for this early morning post, the new T-Pain/Lily Allen song popped into my head…and now it’s stuck there.  Great!

Anywho, I had a much easier time getting out of bed this morning than I did yesterday, and got my butt over to the gym by 6.  I hopped on the treadmill and completed the following workout.

Can you tell I was starting to get a little antsy by the end there?!  Normally I really like this workout, but today it was a little less engaging than usual…hopefully that’s just a fluke since I’ve got many months of treadmill runs ahead of me!  Once I was done, I hurried home to take out Izzie and get some breakfast in me.  Today’s breakfast was nice and simple.

A bowl of Honey Sunshine with sliced bananas and almond milk.

Since I had some banana leftover (I had more leftover than you see here, but I snacked on it while I was slicing), I spread some peanut butter on top.  I love the combination of peanut butter and banana.  It’s one of the best pb combos, in my opinion.

I did not reserve the knife for its beauty in the above photo.  I kept it on hand so I could share some nut butter with this little lady.

How can I say no to those eyes?  I’ll tell you how.  I can’t.

Actually, I really do need to get better about this.  Izzie’s begging has been out of control recently.  A few months ago we put her on a new diet, and though it may not appear this way from my blog posts, part of the change involved cutting way back on the people-food-sharing.

As a behavior analyst, I am constantly preaching that behaviors that are intermittently reinforced are the hardest to reduce.  It’s always worth a shot!  So, since I am basically setting Izzie up to be the most annoying dog ever by intermittently reinforcing her begging, I came up with a plan.

My plan is to give Izzie scraps on the weekends, as a special treat.  I will use a training clicker prior to weekend meals to signal to her that her “reinforcement” will be available.  Clicker = mom will give you food; No Clicker = no food.  Got it, Iz?

If I can stick to it, I think this will be an interesting and fun experiment!

Kind of like Jim Halpert’s:

Today I’ve actually got two evening meetings as well so I’m off to get some stuff done before heading back out the door!

Pumpkin Peanut Butter

The past few nights have been very cool, actually cold, here in Chicago.  We’ve been sleeping with the window cracked open and the temperature in our bedroom has been perfect.  Perfect for sleeping…and for not wanting to get up!

This morning, I took advantage of the perfect cuddle-under-the-blankets weather for a few more minutes than I should have, which resulted in a rushed breakfast and late-night workout/breakfast post.  Woopsie!

At the gym this morning, I decided to do a hill workout on the treadmill.  Here it is!

I kept up a pretty fast pace for the first few inclines, but eventually had to dial it back a notch.  I really love this workout – it makes you feel like you are really working your body, and like you have accomplished something at the end!  After I finished up on the treadmill, I did some upper body strength training.  I did 15 reps, 3 sets each on the following machines:

Bicep curls

Tricep push downs

Lateral raises

Pull downs

Chest press

Shoulder press

My arms felt like jello for a good portion of the morning!

When I got home, I whipped up a quick and easy breakfast – pumpkin peanut butter on a cinnamon raisin bagel thin.

2 Tbsp peanut butter + 1/2 Tbsp pumpkin butter = creamy peanutty pumpkiny goodness!

This bagel really hit the spot, and kept me full through the morning.  Which was helpful since I was in a meeting all day!

I quickly brewed a to-go mug of green tea and was off!

Now I am finally home and am enjoying last night’s episode of the Beverly Hills housewives 🙂

I had to work this morning, so I had another early morning trip to the gym.  My appointment wasn’t until 10 so I let myself sleep in until 7:30 and then made my way next door.  I consider myself very lucky that our gym is 2 steps from our building!

My plan was to bike as a warm up and then complete a treadmill workout.  But when I hopped on the treadmill I was just not feeling it.  I quickly changed my plan and made my way back to the bike.  In the end, I biked for 40 minutes and ran for 5 (valiant effort!).

While on the bike, I enjoyed an episode of the Rachel Zoe project and occasionally flipped through Competitor magazine.

This issue had a bunch of recipes that I am itching to try!  It seems Competitor is going to be focusing on nutrition more frequently, which should make it a pretty interesting read 🙂

I was in an extreme rush when I got home from the gym and quickly made myself a bowl of cereal before I jetted out the door.  I mixed some chex and Kashi Go Lean Crisp, but was dismayed when I realized we were out of milk.  I got over it when I realized I still had some chocolate soy milk left!  The chocolaty bowl of cereal made my morning!

When I arrived home from my appointment, Nick and I ordered from Jimmy John’s and I tried my very first Unwich.

The unwich is any of their subs, with crispy crunchy lettuce wrapped around the contents in place of bread.  I opted for the turkey bacon club and boy, was it good!  It tasted just like a BLT…just minus the bread.  On the side, we enjoyed some salt and vinegar chips.

Now to finally enjoy the weekend!

Every day I’m shufflin’

Today was another early morning!  This week has been pretty rough in terms of hours.  Early mornings + late nights = exhaustion!  Luckily, I was able to remove myself from bed at a reasonable time this morning in order to sneak in a quickie workout.  I walked in the door of the gym 5 minutes later than I did on Tuesday…and I had to leave the house 30 minutes earlier.  So, I jumped to it and completed this quick 25-minute treadmill workout.

When I started my workout I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to do.  I knew I wanted to alternate 1-minute work and 1-minute easy, so I started off with a 6/8.5 alternating pace.  My legs were pretty tired, though, and I knew I needed to mix in some walking to keep them fresh during the sprints.

Taking walk breaks is actually encouraged by a lot of marathon coaches/training plans because you engage different muscles when walking vs. running.  Taking walk breaks helps your legs to conserve resources and fatigue more slowly.  Works for me!  To keep it challenging, I set the treadmill at an incline during the walk breaks.  Incline walking on a treadmill is  tough because you constantly feel like you are battling gravity.  Though I’m sure I looked like a crazy lady switching up the incline and speed so frequently, I felt like I got  a really great workout.

Once I was done, I hurried home, walked Izzie, scarfed down a bagel thin with pumpkin butter, and hustled out the door.

Thankfully, I had some free time in between appointments and was able to come home for lunch.  Once I got home, I snacked on some pretzels with Sabra hummus (aka the best store-bought hummus out there).

I was so hungry I probably could’ve just snacked my way through this entire container of hummus.  But I controlled my urges and made myself a grilled turkey and cheese sandwich instead.  I brushed each side of an everything bagel thin with olive oil, grilled on either side for a few minutes, and dug in.  On the side, I enjoyed an apple and some Kashi TLC crackers.

The sandwich was missing a little somethin’ somethin’ so I added some Tapatio hot sauce.

The sauce really amped up the flavor and heat!  And yes, that is RHWONJ in the background.  One of the perks of coming home for lunch?  Reality TV! 😉

Oh, and guess who else loves hot sauce?

Hot spray certainly wouldn’t keep this girl from chewing on the furniture!  Silly dog…
